Found this little (?) guy hanging out around the corner from my office. While I'm sure that there are others out there due to cross-compatibility with Explorer parts (a quick Google search confirms this), this is the first modded Mountaineer that I've come across.

I actually kind of dig it. Yeah, the paint isn't in the best shape or whatever, but it's got a pretty decent rugged look going. Some quasi-Jurassic-Park shit.

Although I think the guy should replace the roof-mounted spare tire with a machine-gun nest. Maybe that's just me.

I love these "run what ya brung" overland vehicles. Guys who clearly just want to get and and see/do stuff and not mince about tarting up their trucks for a certain look. Props to this guy.

The best part about Mercuries now: they're often cheaper than the Ford counterpart despite being almost identical, even though they cost more new.

Funny story about Mountaineers: you can rent a U-Haul trailer with one, but not with an Explorer, because U-Haul was named in a bunch of Firestone lawsuits as co-defendent when a U-Haul trailer was involved as well. U-Haul solution, to avoid litigation? Ban Explorers!

Purely a gesture, obviously, but that's the legal world for you.

I actually saw a Gen 1 Mountaineer modified just a week or 2 ago and was like WHAT DID YOU DO.

Then I looked again and went, oh ok. I approve, its a 4x4 with a v8 why not

I had a Mountaineer years ago. I let the ex take it in the divorce. Two of the best decisions I ever made. That thing had way too many gremlins. Rear driver door wouldn't open from the outside. Front passenger door wouldn't open from the inside. Drivers door wouldn't lock at all. The rear windshield wiper would operate when ever it felt like coming on. The brakes didn't last for sh!t. Then again that was probably because of her driving. It ran great but had the occasional check engine light which usually went away before I could check it. The power was decent. You may want to check to see if the recall had been completed. It was either an issue with the power steering or the cruise control that needed to be fixed.

It's a 302 (5.0) V8 with a C4 auto trans hooked to it.

I upgraded it to a 4 barrel Holley carb (was originally a 2 barrel) and a Performer RPM Edelbrock intake. I also added true dual Super 44 Flowmaster exhaust.

These 3 upgrades have completely brought the old 302 to life, it's crazy loud and soo much faster. It also has the Cyclone Grand Touring package on it. That was kind enough to give me a sway bar upgrade and power steering, though power brakes would have been nice lol.

I paid next to nothing for it and it's got the original window sticker with it and only 60,000 original miles.

Heres a video of the exhaust upgrade to completely change everything you've ever thought about the word "Montego". If you want to skip the stock single exhaust, jump ahead to about 45 seconds.
